Utilizing the Discrete Orthogonality of Zernike Functions in Corneal Measurements

چکیده
The optical behaviour of the human eye is often characterized with the Zernike coefficients. Great number of measurements and statistical data are available for individuals and for various groups of people concerning the Zernike coefficients of their eyes. Although, these coefficients were obtained from measurements at discrete points and via computations using some discretization of the continuous Zernike functions, the developers of these algorithms could not rely on the discrete orthogonality Zernike functions, simply because no mesh of points ensuring discrete orthogonality was known. Only recently was such a mesh of points found and reported. In the present paper, this mesh is used to calculate Zernike coefficients for some artificial cornea-like surfaces. Tests were carried out and are reported herein on the precision of the discrete orthogonality obtained via the mentioned discretization and on the precision of the surface reconstruction.

Representation of Videokeratoscopic Height Data Using a Set of Discrete Tchebichef Orthogonal Polynomials
The continuous orthogonal polynomials, such as Zernike and pseudo-Zernike, are often used as an expansion of corneal height data. However, the use of continuous polynomials has some limitations due to the discretization. It is because that the integrals are usually approximated by discrete summations, and this process not only leads to numerical errors, but also severely affects some analytical...

Reduction of the quality of the image formed by an optical system is a function of different parameters such as lens aberrations, CCD digitization errors, and the errors of system assembling. Assembling errors usually consist of two types: 1) the prism error, which is the error of non-orthogonality of the optical axis and the image plane 2) the de-centering error, which is error of not passing ...
متن کاملInfluence of overnight orthokeratology lens fitting decentration on corneal topography reshaping
Background This retrospective study was designed to investigate the sole influence of orthokeratology (OK) lens fitting decentration on the Zernike coefficients of the reshaped anterior corneal surface. Methods This study comprised a review of 106 right eyes and measurements of corneal topography both before OK and at 1-month follow-up visit. A routine was designed to calculate local corneal ...
متن کاملOrthogonality of Zernike Polynomials
Zernike polynomials are an orthogonal set over a unit circle and are often used to represent surface distortions from FEA analyses. There are several reasons why these coefficients may lose their orthogonality in an FEA analysis. The effects, their importance, and techniques for identifying and improving orthogonality are discussed. Alternative representations are presented.
متن کاملComparative analysis of some modal reconstruction methods of the shape of the cornea from corneal elevation data.
PURPOSE A comparative study of the ability of some modal schemes to reproduce corneal shapes of varying complexity was performed, by using both standard radial polynomials and radial basis functions (RBFs). The hypothesis was that the correct approach in the case of highly irregular corneas should combine several bases. METHODS Standard approaches of reconstruction by Zernike and other types ...
